Below is the complete press release from Hartford Stage:
SummerStage 2000 to include Eleanor and St. Nicholas Stage and Screen Stars Jean Stapleton and David Selby return to Hartford Stage!Hartford Stage, under the artistic direction of Michael Wilson, today announced its plans for SummerStage 2000, the second year of Mr. Wilson’s initiative to extend the company’s programming into the summer months. In addition to the limited return engagement of Jean Stapleton’s critically acclaimed and much loved performance in Rhoda Lerman’s Eleanor – Her Secret Journey (July 5th to 9th), the company will produce Conor McPherson’s one-man play St. Nicholas, starring David Selby (July 18th to 22nd). Miss Stapleton’s theatrical portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt, directed by John Tillinger, played to standing-room-only houses during its run at Hartford Stage last August. Since then Ms. Stapleton has played sold-out engagements of the production in Miami and San Francisco. Miss Stapleton has expressed great pleasure at the opportunity to return to Hartford Stage this summer, where she enjoys playing in such an intimate theatre, in close proximity to her audience. Mr. Selby, who starred as James Tyrone in Michael Wilson’s production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night last season, returns to play an alcoholic Irish theatre critic who leaves his wife and his newspaper Mr. Wilson commented, “I’m so glad to have the opportunity to work with David Selby again. Although he’s probably best-known for his work in the television series Falcon Crest, he’s a magnificent stage actor – as he demonstrated to Connecticut audiences last year playing opposite Ellen Burstyn in Long Day’s Journey. Conor McPherson’s quirkily engaging St. Nicholas will provide David with a great acting opportunity – and should be of interest to all of us who remember and cherish his performances in the long-running television series Dark Shadows.” “And of course, it’s always a pleasure to have America’s beloved Jean Stapleton with us. SummerStage is meant to provide theatrical entertainments both for our regular audiences and for people who don’t necessarily attend Hartford Stage year round, and these two productions – with these two wonderful actors – should fit the bill perfectly.” Eleanor plays from Wednesday, July 5th to Sunday, July 9th. Curtain times are 7:30 pm on Wedneday and Thursday, 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday. St. Nicholas previews on Tuesday, July 18th, opens to the press on July 19th, and runs through Saturday, July 22nd. Curtain times are 7:30 pm on Tuesday through Thursday, and 8 pm on Friday and Saturday. Tickets to all performances of both productions are $ 35, with a special $ 30 price for Hartford Stage subscribers and groups of at least ten people. People who wish to purchase tickets for both productions may do so at a price of $ 60 for individuals and $ 50 for subscribers and groups. (Anyone who has already purchased a ticket for Eleanor and wishes to add St. Nicholas may do so, and obtain the discounted rate). Tickets for Eleanor and St. Nicholas are on sale now.
