In 1999, David Selby recorded voice tracks for the role of the griffin in West Virginia Public Television's animated production of Frank Stockton's short story, "The Griffin and the Minor Canon." After some production delays, the half-hour program finally debuted on West Virginia Public Television on March 19, 2002. Screen grabs from The Griffin and the Minor Canon have been added to the Photo Gallery. A copy of this half-hour animated special, featuring the vocal talents of famous West Virginians including Don Knotts, Kathy Mattea, Soupy Sales, and Chris Sarandon, is available for $19.95 from West Virginia Public Broadcasting. On Sunday, June 18, 2000, The Sunday Gazette-Mail reported that the production had hit a snag. In October 2000, the film was screened as a work in progress at West Virginia University. The West Virginia University Alumni Magazine Fall 2002 issue featured an article on The Griffin and the Minor Canon entitled, "This is No Looney Toon." On January 9, 2003, The Griffin and the Minor Canon received the "Best of Show Award" at the National Educational Telecommunications Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Brad Stalnaker was present to accept the award. The Griffin and the Minor Canon was nominated for two Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards in the Art & Culture Program and Audio Post-Production categories.
