By SandyFans of the long-running CBS drama Falcon Crest delighted in the reunion of two of their favorite stars, Susan Sullivan and David Selby. The pair reunited for a one-night performance of A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters at the historic Apollo Theater in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Proceeds from the event are to benefit the restoration of Main Street Martinsburg. The last time the two actors had appeared together professionally was in 1989, at the funeral of her Falcon Crest character, Maggie Gioberti Channing. Fortunately, Susan looked a little more lively this time around, and the two were in top form. The sweet, playful chemistry so palpable during their days in the fictional Tuscany Valley was clearly in evidence as they read their Love Letters. Said Susan on working with her former t.v. husband again, “My God, what can I say? It was like coming home.” David readily agreed, stating, “It was wooonderful.” The 1990 Pulitzer nominee chronicles the fifty-year love affair between Andy Ladd and Melissa Gardner through a series of letters. The correspondence begins in second grade and spans summer camp, boarding school, college and beyond. There’s flirting, there’s sniping. And there’s a deep love conveyed in the relationship of the two characters, which is often platonic but occasionally more. The story is both hilarious and bittersweet. And Susan and David, who have remained close since their Falcon Crest days, were convincing as a pair of cozy old friends. Fans of Crest’s Richard and Maggie Channing were no doubt curious about the chemistry of the pair. And they weren’t disappointed. The chemistry is still there, according to fans who traveled from near and far. Darlene of Deland, Florida, endured a layover in Newark and a scary flight on a puddle-jumper. But she insists it was worthwhile. “I was excited to see the two of them together again—they played off each other very well. And I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was. That was unexpected.” Ilene of Atlanta, Georgia says, “Traveling 1200 miles was well worth it. You wonder if two people who haven’t worked together in fourteen years would still have the same chemistry…and they did.” Ilene’s husband, Michael, added, “The chemistry was real, and the two of them seemed glad to be together again.” Following the sold-out performance, the stars mingled with fans who’d splurged for reserved tickets at a reception at Martinsburg’s Art Centre. Susan and David were exceptionally good sports, graciously posing for photos and signing autographs well after midnight. Kudos to all those who organized the event, as well as culinary arts students from the James Rumsey Technical Institute, who provided the lovely ice sculpture, hors d’ oeuvres and fancy truffles. |
